How to make a GIF from a video
- Add a video: drop it on the box, or tap Choose a video and pick one from your phone.
- Drag the two handles to the part you want, up to 15 seconds. The preview loops just that part.
- Pick a width and how many frames a second. 480 pixels at 15 frames a second suits most chats.
- Add a caption if you want one, or turn on Boomerang so it plays forward and then back.
- Press Make GIF. Download it, or on a phone press Share to send it or save it to your photos.
Your video stays on your device
The tool reads the frames with your browser's own video decoder and builds the GIF in the same tab. Nothing is sent to Leap or anyone else, so there's no upload to wait for and nothing to delete afterward. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working without a connection. It takes MP4, MOV and WebM, including videos straight from an iPhone or an Android phone and screen recordings, as long as your browser can play them.Keeping a GIF small
A GIF stores every frame as a picture with at most 256 colors, so it grows quickly. The tool picks one palette for the whole clip, which stops colors from flickering, and keeps only the pixels that change from one frame to the next, so a still background costs almost nothing. In our tests, a 5-second vertical clip at 480 pixels wide and 15 frames a second came out at 5 to 6 MB, and a 6-second landscape clip at 480 × 270 under 2.5 MB.If a GIF comes out too heavy, make it narrower, lower the frames a second, or keep a shorter part. The page tells you when a GIF is over 10 MB, which is Discord's limit without Nitro. From a GIF to a clip nobody else has
Leap's effects turn one photo of a friend into a 5-second video: they melt like soft-serve, get shaken in a snow globe, or get beamed up by a UFO. Those run in the Leap studio and are paid per clip. Bring the clip back here and turn it into a GIF; the converter stays free.Rewrite a text in your own wordsPaste it to see what a rewrite costs. Nothing is sent until you choose to.

Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no limit on how many GIFs you make. The work happens on your own device, so a GIF costs Leap nothing.
No. Your browser reads the clip and builds the GIF inside the tab. Nothing from the video is sent to Leap or to anyone else.
Up to 15 seconds. Longer GIFs get too heavy to post in most apps, so for a longer clip, keep it as a video. The video resizer trims and reframes clips for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
Yes. It works in Safari on an iPhone and in Chrome on Android. When the GIF is ready, press Share to send it to a chat or save it to your photos.
A GIF can only use 256 colors, so the tool adds a fine dot pattern to smooth gradients, like skies and skin, to hide the banding they would otherwise get. A narrower GIF, or a clip with fewer colors, looks cleaner.
Yes. Type a caption and it's written over the bottom of every frame in bold white letters with a black edge, so it reads on any background. The preview shows it as it will look.
