How the estimate is worked out
It starts from about 550 words on a single-spaced page of Times New Roman 12 pt with 1-inch margins. A page with 1.5 spacing holds two thirds of that, about 370 words, and a double-spaced page holds half, about 275.Arial fits about 10% fewer words than Times New Roman at the same size, and Calibri about 5% more. Font size changes both how many words fit on a line and how many lines fit on a page, so the estimate scales with the square of the size: 10 pt fits about 44% more words than 12 pt, and 14 pt about a quarter fewer. If you paste text instead of a number, the converter counts the words first. What changes the real page count
The estimate assumes pages of running prose. Headings, a title block and short paragraphs leave lines half empty, and dialogue does the same each time the speaker changes, so they all add pages. Wider margins, extra space between paragraphs, block quotes, lists and tables move the count as well, and a cover page or reference list adds pages the word count doesn't include. For an exact figure, put the text in your document with the required format and read the page count there. When an assignment sets the length
School and journal rules usually set the format, and the format decides the pages. MLA papers are double-spaced with 1-inch margins in an easily readable font, usually Times New Roman 12 pt. APA 7 is also double-spaced and accepts several fonts, including Times New Roman 12, Arial 11 and Calibri 11. In those settings a page holds roughly 250 to 350 words, so set the converter to the font your guide or teacher names. A 5-page double-spaced paper in Times New Roman 12 pt is about 1,375 words, and a 10-page one about 2,750.To go the other way, from a page target to a word count, use the pages to words calculator.
